Yoga, mindfulness and meditation provide so many benefits! People new to these activities can be hesitant, but I feel strongly that anyone can explore these practices.
Through this series “Yoga Student’s Speak” you will meet some of my students. They come from diverse backgrounds, they came to my practice for different reasons, and they see a variety of benefits during their practice.
Get to know some of the people who practice alongside you virtually or in person.
Meet Martha
So you’ve never tried yoga, but you want to? Then try it! I’ll go with you!
Q: Why do you practice yoga/mindfulness/meditation?
A: Why do I do yoga? I feel better physically and mentally renewed after a session. I hope that it will help improve my balance, lower back and posture, as well.
Q: What are some of your favourite poses or practices and why?
A: Child’s pose (great for the lower back) and Shavasna. So relaxing.
Q: What are some of your least favourite poses or practices and why?
A: Balance poses are the least favourite because I’m not able to hold them well (yet).
Q: How has your view of yoga/mindfulness/meditation changed over time (if it has)?
A: Oh wow! My first yoga adventures were not fun. I felt awkward and out of my comfort zone. Then I met Ashley! Now yoga is so comfortable and and enjoyable. Looking forward to in person lessons.
Q: What do you enjoy about yoga/mindfulness/meditation?
A: The way I feel at the end of a session! I’m relaxed, my joints and muscles loosened – it’s truly amazing. Emptying my mind gets easier with time. 🙂
Q: What would you say to someone who wants to try yoga/mindfulness/meditation for the first time, but is hesitant?
A: So you’ve never tried yoga, but you want to? Then try it! I’ll go with you! Ashley is so easy to learn from. She gives so many variations of a move that you will feel comfortable with how you choose to participate.
Q: What do you enjoy about any of your experiences or interactions with Ashley?
A: She genuinely believes what she teaches, and it shows in her practice. This makes learning with her comfortable and I appreciate that. (I’m older and sometimes my body says ‘nope, not happening’ so having Ashley adapt poses makes me feel I’m doing ok.) It’s a great feeling. Loved the sleep yoga – breathing exercises – reminders to breathe during a pose – sitting taller – I use these tools, sometimes without even realizing it.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share? (stories, experiences, thoughts, reflections, explanations- anything)
A: Ashley is great at trying new ways to enhance our enjoyment of her yoga classes. We’ve had outdoor yoga, sleep yoga, gardening yoga, beach yoga, hiked at Thomas Cove and stopped to do different poses along the way (watch for ticks), her enthusiasm knows no bounds when it comes to her students. Treat yourself to a class – it’s a treat for your mind and body. Relax and enjoy!
